Namaste to Everyone!
The Himalayan Education Development Project is proud to report that we will be having 6 teacher/volunteers trekking to Lumsa, Nepal this spring and summer to volunteer at The Jana Priya Secondary School located in the remote village of Lumsa. In order to get to the school, they will fly from Kathmandu, Nepal to the remote airstrip at Phaplu and then trek for two days to Lumsa.
Terry Edeli, a retired Teacher/Administrator and Curriculum specialist, will be coming in March and spending 3 weeks working with the teachers and administrators there on various techiniques of instruction.
Mike Nicholson, an AP Global Studies,U.S History Teacher, will be in Lumsa from June 15 until late July and will be working with the teachers there teaching Global Studies and English.
Jen Janowsky, a student at Southwestern High School, will be in Lumsa for 2 weeks in July as an assistant to Mike Nicholson. In addition, her parents, Eric Snabl and Sandy Meyers Snabl will be with her also, volunteering their services at the school and throughout the village.
I will be coming along also, as assistant trip leader. My wife, Sue will be with me also and hopefully bringing her talents as a violin teacher to the students and villagers!
It has been an incredible few months of planning!
Amber Tamang will be the trip leader as we all trek to and volunteer our services to the people of the village that is his home!

Everest Climb Postponed

I was in full training mode for Everest this spring. Unexpectedly.. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. On one of my recent trips to Nepal I contracted a virus which attacked my pancreas and eventually rendered it useless. I am now totally insulin dependent. Only 3 people with Type 1 Diabetes have climbed Everest..due to how the extremes of altitude, cold, and physical exertion affect monitors, blood levels etc.. My Drs. have advised that i wait for at least 6 months before attempting an Everest climb (as my diagnosis is so new0. At 57..I would be the oldest Type 1 Diabetic to have ever climbed Everest.
Instead, I am trekking to Everest Base Camp(17,600 ft) and climbing 2 smaller peaks (18,000+ ft)..as a "test run" for this new condition. I will be trekking for 30+ days at altitudes above 15,000 ft. If all goes well an October 2011 Everest attempt is possible.
I will be going to Base Camp with Dr. Joel Adelson( a good friend and outstanding physician)as well as David Noyes, an award winning journalist, photographer and extreme adventure traveler( who will be documenting this expedition.)
Improvise, Adapt and Overcome!

Unfortunate News

I am sorry to have to report the death of Ted Pasquale in a motorcycle accident! Ted and I went "way back" and, as often happens, we reconnected when in 2009 he contacted me about trekking to Everest Base Camp and climbing Island Peak.
We became very close friends, again, while meeting regularly and planning the trip.
ted was an accomplished "Adventure Traveler" and had organized multiple trips to Africa and climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro numerous times!
Ted and I spent a month together last October trekking to Everest Base Camp and attempted to climb Island Peak(20,308 ft). We were unable to due to weather conditions.
Ted was a "hard nosed" "Live Life To The Fullest" type guy and he and I became very close friends(again) on our month long trek to Base Camp!
The "Rest Of The Story" is that Ted designated any "Memorials" In His Name to be directed to The Himalayan Education Development Project! We are in the prcess of establishing The Ted Pasquale Memorial Fund. The top 3 graduates of the Jana Priya Secondary School will receive funds so that can furtherb their educational endeavors!
I will miss Ted more than words can express! And I am honored to have been able to spend time with him doing what we both love so much!!
In his honor, I will be wearing a Clemson hat on the 2011 Everest Climb and, hopefully placing it on the summit of Mt. Everest!

A Busy Season!

Hello Everyone!
It has been a busy few months!
Amber has lead two treks in Ladakh and to Everest Base Camp. The fall trekking and climbing season in The Himalayas is winding down and now 3 Jewels Adventures can concentrate on the upcoming 2011 Everest South Clean Climb (March - May 2011).
We now have a fairly good group of Base Camp Support Trekkers signed up and hopefully the Summit Team will be adding more climbers also!
HED continues to grow thanks to the many people who send in donations and offer their time and services! One of the newest projects is The Shoe Revolution! We are looking for donations of gently used hiking shoes(size 6-8), winter coats, gloves, hats etc. These will be given to the Nepalese Guides, Porters and Support Staff who work in the Trekking and Climbing industry in the Himalayas. Everest South 2011 Clean Climb Update

Training is on schedule and involves long distance runs, strength training and yoga/Tai Chi for balance and flexibility.
Amber has been on an extended trek to his home village in Lumsa. He has taken HED funds to pay for the teacher/Librarian pay for The Jana Priya School.
He will also be travelling to The Full Moon Shaman Festival to document this ancient, and soon to be forgotten, event!
I am working with various Gear Companies in obtaining some Everest Essentials.Gear and Training(www.gearandtraining.com)has been fantastic in helping me to get the best deals available! Steven McCarthey, Owner, has been going "the extra mile"! And I am extremely grateful!
When you are facing tempatures of -50 below and winds in excess of 60+ MPH....You can't "compromise on quality"!
The Himalayan Education Development Project is "on board" to be the major contributor for a Mini Hydo-Electric Project in the Tapting region of Nepal. It will also serve The Jana Priya Secondary School, one of HED's premier projects.
When completed....it will be the first time this area and the school has ever had electricity!

2011 Everest Clean Climb

So far, I am the only "non Nepali" climber signed up for The 2011Everest Clean Climb.
I am fine with that because it means that KB Tamang(2009 Solo Everest Climber ) will be my personal Guide!
Training is progressing according to schedule and I am now running (treadmill) 6 miles per day(working up to 10 miles)! Also there is stationary bike work and, starting in Sept., carrying/running a hilly course (4 miles) with backpack weight starting at 30lbs and gradually increasing to 60lbs.
January 2011 I will be training on Mt. Washington NH.for a week. Ice climbing, crampon skills, Jumar work and other skills.
Even though Everest has become a somewhat "commercial" climb....it is still a very Dangerous,Challenging Endeavor that sees more Failures Than Triumphs!

Shoulder surgery and a "whrlwind" tour!

I have been cleared by my Dr. and PT person to start back to "normal" activities! Still have some "minor" problems....but am back to full on training for the 2011 Everst Clean Climb.
My family and I spent a week traveling to Cleveland, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. I gave 2 full slide shows in Cleveland ( a college reunion) and Indianapolis about HED.
We are looking for Sponsors for our 2011 Everest Clean Climb. A percentage of your donation will go towards our efforts in Nepal! Plus, it is an opportunity to experience Everest from "our point of view".
Amber Tamang is heading to his "home village" to see how The Jana Priya School is doing and then he will travel to The Full Moon Shaman Festival to film this unique and centuries old event!
I am in continual contact with the L.A. production company about our Documentary " The Unseen Himalayas". Such endeavors are sometimes years in the making....however, I had a great conversation with the President of the company....and we are continuing "negotiations".
So now the focus is the 2011 Everest Clean Climb....training, sponsors and PR radio interviews and newspaper interviews. It is a major undertaking and is currently occupying most of my time.

One Foot Ahead Of The Other

Hello All!
Been awhile since the last update. Alot has been taking place. Amber and I have been working on the 2011 Everest Clean Climb. Planning an Expedition of this scale requires alot of "multi-tasking" and networking!
We have some interested people both for the Climb itself and the Support Trek to Base Camp.It is a major undertaking both in time and finance. However, I am "ON BOARD"!
HED continues to move along with it's ongoing and new projects! We have volunteers interested in teaching at The Jana Priya Secondary School in Tapting.
We have been working on The Buddhist/Tamang Cultural Outreach Center in Kathmandu as well researching the construction of a school building and teacher for The Tamang Cave People.
With all that is going on world wide and in Nepal, The Himalayan Education Development Project continues to move forward in our effort to be a Positive Force!

HED is continuing to support our ongoing and new projects! We will be sending clothing and medical supplies to The Tamang Cave People in the next few weeks. In addition, we are working with them to set up a school and teacher for the 28 children living in this isolated region of Langtang.
Plans are under way for the development of a Buddhist Cultural Center in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. The Center will help Nepalese moving to Kathmandu in job aquisition, housing,medical services and other related areas. In addition, it will serve as a place where tourists can visit to learn more about the Nepalese people and their unique culture!

Sorry....I pushed the wrong button. Published the title, with no dialogue!
Pres. Obama has "earmarked" funds to "help Nepal and other Asian nations. My concern is "how much of the $ will "actually" get to "the people"! The current Gov't is "corrupt" and the Maoists, as always, talk a "good show", however, in the end "The People" never benefit.So many,"unmentionable" arrangements and deals!
HED has received some generous donations from numerous organizations and businesses since my return to the States!It is heartwarming to know that HED's efforts are being "recognized"!
I am scheduled to meet with my Ortho-surgeon tomorrow.My right shoulder has been "compromised" for some time now! Forty years of weightlifting, shot+discus throwing and PE teaching and carrying 100lb loads.... have contributed to a "possible" operation. All I know is that I am unable to lift a cup of coffee up with my arm!
Friends(who have had such surgery) tell me about "lengthy recoveries", etc. I have had numerous knee surgeries and dealt with many other "procedures" and physical complications, throughout my career."This to shall pass"!
On to The 2011 Everest Nepal Guides Cooperative "Clean Climb"! I am part of a four person Everest Summit Climb, whose objective is, not only to summit Everest....but to remove garbage and debris from the slopes of Everest's South side. We will be documenting the entire Expedition, led by an all Nepalese based consortium of Guides and Climbers!!

US Support, Shoulder Surgery, Everest Climb,Gov't Still In "Flux"

Namaste All!
Yesterday Amber and I caught a "Tourism Board" bus to the airport in Kathmandu for my flight back home. I was sad to be leaving Amber, his family and my other friends in the midst of a "situation" that probably will get worse before it gets better.
Police in full riot gear lined most of the main streets,as the days protests were getting ready to commence. The Maoists are noe experiencing their own problems....sickness, desertion(as those who were "drafted" into their movement)are needing to get back to their villages and begin planting crops.
The PM still will not step down, even though his own want him to. There seems to be no Compromise.
In am able to leave it behind for now but my friends and the people we are committed to helping cannot. But as Amber says "It is what it is"! And I know I can do more here in the states.
So, I'm in LA after 18 hrs of flights with another day of flights back to my home.

Namaste Friends!

Last night things got "tense"! The Maoists increased their Protests, extortion of shop and business owners and Westerners were advised to "stay off the streets"! The "heat is on" and many of the "first timers" here now realize that this is not some "made for T.V. movie"! Skirmishes broke out between students and Maoists. It was "Final Exam Day" for High School seniors. The Maoists came to the main testing center and tried to break windows and furniture and tear up the tests. The Students "fought back" and drove the Maoists off the site!! So....the "tide seems to be turning" led by "The Educated" who know that Change is needed but that this is not the Way!
I was sitting in the small lobby of the Potala Guest House(where I have stayed on all my tips here). I was talking to two people from Italy and a Frenchman....when a large "disruption" broke out one floor up at the small privately owned restaurant attached to the Hotel. We heard glass breaking, shouting and someone yelling for help!
I ran upstairs to see a Tibetan man lying on the floor bloodied and beaten. The owner of the restaurant had failed to "heed" the Maoist's warning to keep their business closed! The result "A Beat Down"! The "westerners" declined to get involved yet, it was obvious that this man needed help! We brought him down to the lobby and I asked the hotel staff for a Med Kit. They produced a "rudimentary" box of supplies and I proceeded to treat his numerous wounds. The staff said that the only means of transport to the Hospital was by "human powered" rickshaw about an hour away.He seemed to have a concussion as his pupils were "not right" and he was somewhat incoherent. We helped him into the rickshaw and off he went!
Here is what I emailed my friends back home ...." The Maoists and the current Leaders....and any group, who desires to "be in power"....have one "Agenda"....as have many other leaders and "want to be leaders".... now and throughout history. They "placate" the masses with "idle promises", yet never produce! Their "rhetoric" implies " Better Times For All".
But....in the end....it is all about Pride,Greed,Fear,Ignorance and Desire! And "the common, hard working people, pay "the ultimate price"! Sound familiar?
Tomorrow, I am leaving Nepal....but I will return in a short time,striving in some small way.... with my Nepalese brothers and sisters to "Make A Difference!"

Kathmandu May 2, 2010-May Get Worse Before It Gets Better!

Namaste All,

The Maoists had threatened a General Strike starting today, if the PM refused to "step down"....So, true to their word....Kathmandu is "shut down" all shops and businesses are closed and the streets are virtually deserted.The usual din of horns from cars,buses,motorcycles has been replaced by an "rather pleasant" quiet.
Small groups of Maoists came through the streets today making sure that all shops and businesses were "locked"....under threat of immediate retaliation. The restaurant here at my hotel has only eggs and pancakes to serve. No bread or other things are being delivered. But I have stocked up on munchies and bottled water...so I should be fine!
So far today there have been no mass marches....at least not here in Thamel. But Amber and others I have talked to anticipate that there could be some "skirmishes" today and tonight! The only agreement made between the two factions is that safe bus travel to the airport will take place for westerners needing to catch flights out!
Other than that there is a tense "standoff" taking place.
I have been filming and taking pics as much as I can and now it seems as though all we can do is wait and see how this is going to play out!
Amber and I are still moving along with HED project plans and logistics!
That's it for now as the power is scheduled to go off in a few minutes!

Demonstrations....conflict....Change! I have managed to get a flight out May 4th and should be back in Lkwd May 5th. The situation here is "uncertain at best"! Major Maoist street demonstrations and Kathmandu is virtually "shut down"!
The current PM offered to "step down"....however, bolstered by India's support has decided to remain and even "taunted" the 400,000 plus Maoists! Demonstrations have been very evident throughout Kathmandu and unless an "agreement" is reached....will continue continue to escalate! The situation here is at a "Pivotal Point"!
Amber and I had breakfast together this morning and worked on ongoing and future HED concerns. In the midst of all this conflict.... we continue to strive to help the people of Nepal...."One Small Step At A Time"!

Update from Kathmandu

Namaste Friends!

Power here has been off for many hours at a time during the business day. It is called Load Sharing yet it disrupts businesses and independent merchants etc. So there are times when one wonders if it is a "tool" of the Gov't?
The situation in Kathmandu is escalating The Maoists have planned a May 1 "Peaceful Demonstration/Protest" They have and estimated 300,000 trained "protesters", supporters and others heading to Kathmandu from outlying areas outside Kathmandu.They have been getting funding by "strong arming" business owners for donations and other such means.The other day police seized a large truckload of Khukuri knives and Lakshis which are 6 foot long "fighting sticks".
The Maoists are calling for the Prime Minister and his cabinet to "step down" and will continue the "demonstrations" until he does Also on May 2 they have planned a city wide "indefinite" strike, which will close shops and bring all transportation to a halt.
It is obvious that this large "Peaceful Protest/Demonstration" will eventually see "clashes" with Gov't forces and local police! Such is the nature of situations like this.
I was hoping to change my flight to get out of KTM before the 1st, however the soonest I may be able to leave is May 2nd. I will have to walk to the airport(4+ miles) but will be helped by my Tamang Brothers and other friends, who assure me that neither the Maoists or the gov't troops/police do not harm tourists as it would be "self defeating". So, it appears as though I will be able to film some of this event!
Even though my friends here do not necessarily support the Maoist's philosophy....they do admit that Change is needed as the current Gov't is corrupt and greedy and has not helped the people at all!
On a positive note HED has been busy organizing getting clothes, medicine and other supplies to The Tamang Cave People which will happen in the next few weeks. In addition we have laid the groundwork for the development of a Buddhist/Tamang Cultural Preservation and Outreach Center here in KTM!
Also, I met the Librarian/Teacher we support at The Jana Priya School in Tapting and we presented him with his salary for the next 3 months! his aunt is the 1st woman to graduate from the school and has just completed her undergrad work heree and is now pursuing an MBA!
So, even in the midst of all this uncertainty and political strife....HED continues to "forge ahead"....Thanks to your generous support!

Things Heating Up in Kathmandu

There has been continuous tension between the various parties vying for control of the Gov't here. May 26th is the deadline for all parties to come to a "binding agreement" on the Constitutional changes. However,such an "agreement" seems unlikely! The Maoist Leader has promised, starting May 1st Mass Peaceful Protests and Demonstrations" until the Constitutional changes are accepted. This usually means that all roads in and out of Kathmandu are blocked and inevitable "clashes" among the Protesters and the Gov't and local police!
So, we do not want to be in the Mountains....unable to get back into the city. If we remain here we most likely will have to stay in the Hotel as will all tourists or try to arrange to leave Nepal earlier than planned.
I want to capture some of the demonstrations and protests on film for our documentary, as it is a vital part of the people's lives here....and the current ruling party is as descrbed to me by a Nepali "greedy and corrupt"!
So We shall see how this will play out. The Gov't forces and local police are already in "show" in the streets in full riot gear!

New School!!!

Namaste Everyone!
We have talked at length about how we can "make a difference" in the Tamang Cave People's lives besides just bringing in clothes etc. They are very content with their current setup and have built fronts and even stone dwellings in the caves. They feel much safer due to the fact that it is very difficult area to reach.....even for the Maoists! And they are able to grow crops etc.and appear to be doing better than information we had previously received!
So after some discussion with their Representative, Amber suggested that we perhaps fund the building of a small school for the 30 plus children. They are very happy about this idea and we also would help support one or two teachers.

Adapting

Amber took a "whirlwind" trip to Langtang to check out logistics for HED"s Tamang Cave Project. More difficult than expected, even by Nepali standards! So, we have worked out to meet the Village Leader at "the trail head" and give them clothes, supplies and other "requested" items.
Political situations here are "extremely tenuous"! The Maoists have guaranteed a "Major Uprising" within the next few days. In Pokhara, where we just returned from....the Maoists staged a major strike and virtually "closed" the area!
So....We are very carefully trying to "tiptoe" through this very unstable situation!

After 26 hours of travel time and 3 flights....I am here in Kathmandu with Amber, his family and a friend of our, Joel who will be joining us on our adventures!
Last night we had a big "Family" dinner and I got a few hours sleep. Spent part of the evening with a group of Russian trekkers talking world stuff and enjoying Kathmandu at night! Once I get settled I'll start sending photos etc. And now....we have a short trek scheduled to Annapurna area after the Langtang Cave people project!

I am busy with "last minute" details for my month long trip to Nepal. I am leaving in about a week!
Friends tell me about "political unrest" in Thailand ( a stop over point) and in Nepal!
All I know is that "We" have raised funds which will make it possible "to benefit" those We are committed to serving!

Heading to Nepal!

I am "booked" to head to Kathmandu April 14th! We are going to head into the Langtang region, with building and medical supplies in order to help the 60 Tamang villagers who have been living in caves(which their ancestors lived in centuries ago). Their village was "wiped out" by a combination of Maoist insurgents and a landslide!
I will be in Nepal almost a month during which we will "organize" the Nepali Guides Cooperative April 2011 "Clean Climb" of Everest and other 3 Jewels Adventures trips and The Himalayan Education Development Project's concerns!
I am looking forward to seeing Amber and The Family, and "Experiencing" Kathmandu and The Himalayas!

Sharing The Load Walk - Final Day

Saturday morning found Mark Kirsch and me tired and and a bit "hobbled"! I was wondering if there was enough left in "my tank" to finish the last 14+ mile stretch!
But I also recalled my days competing in track and field in college. I often had my best performances when I felt this way.
It was another beautiful day and we started out with some new additions....Mary Grace Guarino, a friend from SWCS and Karo Tamang a refugee from Nepal, now living in Erie, and Mark's wife Paula.
We felt great the first half, actually logging faster mile times than the previous 2 days! We stopped for lunch at the junction of I-90 and The Bay Front Connector. Our path now would take us along the footpath which wound through the woods along the road. It was a great trail and we didn't have to worry about traffic.
Action News 24 from Erie, caught up with us about a mile from the finish and after a brief break we headed up 26th street toward The Institute.
About a 1/4 mile from the finish....I thought I saw a group of people standing around up ahead and as we approached it was a large group of refugees from The Institute who had come out to welcome us.
Mark and I were overcome with emotion! At finishing this 3 day goal and at the wonderful reception!

Day 2=Sharing The Load Walk

Another beautiful, sunny day! As you can imagine, I am a "bit" stiff and sore!
But, not as bad a I thought I'd be!
We started at 8:30 am from Sherman for our 15+ mile day. Our pace is a "little slower" starting out today....but we soon get up to speed.
I feel good, just finding the need to stop and stretch for a few seconds every 1/2 mile or so. The biggest "physical" problem is my feet....a little swollen and sore.
We arrive in Colt Station at 5 PM. Really tired, but happy to be done with day 2!
Tomorrow we have shorter day with the last half somewhat downhill to Erie. The last leg! Feet don't fail me know!

Day 1-Sharing The Load Walk

The hardest and longest day of the walk. 17+ miles with the route comprised of mile after mile of long uphills....short downhills and long uphills etc.etc.
The weather was outstanding though! My pace was forced to slow to about 2 miles + per hour.
We stopped every 3 miles to rest and refuel for about 10 minutes.
Since we left at Noon, we started losing daylight with about 2 hours left in the walk.
Mark and Raj(carrying less weight) were able to finished about a half mile ahead of me.
I finished the first day in darkness wearing a headlamp around 8:30 pm.
What A Relief!
No major physical problems....other than sore back,legs and shoulders.
Tomorrow is suppose to be warmer and shorter And Less Hills!
We are also starting at 8 AM....so no more walkin in darkness!

Time To Walk! Sharing The Load

We could not have asked for a better day! Sunny, near 60! The training has gone well and all that's left to do is....WALK!
The response to The Sharing The Load Fun Raiser has been Heart Warming! I have heard from classmates who I have not spoken to in 40 years with donations and good wishes!
Brother Mark Kirsch has helped promote and organize the teachers and students at SWCS! And they have done so many wonderful things to raise funds for The Sharing The Load Event!
So.... At Noon today we "Shoulder our Loads" and begin the first leg of the Walk!
Today is a 17+ mile leg that is not only the longest but also has the most Hills! We will walk from Ashville to Sherman.
Tonight there will be a Celtic Session at The Morse Hotel in Sherman....with all proceeds going to The Sharing The Load!
We will post pictures of the days proceedings and keep you all posted!

Sharing The Load Walk/Concert April Nepal Trip and Everest 2011!

Hello All!

It has been a very busy and exciting month! The Sharing The Load 50 mile Walk and The Concert/Open House are on track and we are hoping for a large turnout and many kind donations to help HED and The International Institute of Erie continue to serve as many as we are able! I am on track with my training despite a "minor" shoulder problem.
HED and 3 Jewels Adventures will be heading to The Tamang Cave people in April, bringing with us funds and supplies to help the 58 who have been living in caves, once used by their ancestors.since their village was destroyed by a landslide and the bridge linking them with the main trade route, was also lost.
We will be heading to the Langtang region, near the Tibetan border April 24 to April 30. I will be heading over April 14 and returning May 12. I am looking forward to going back to my "second home"! Even though I have been busy in the States with fund raising efforts, slide shows, and promotional work for HED and 3 Jewels Adventures....Nepal, Kathmandu and The Himalayas "Keep calling to me"! I'll be returning again in August to help document The Full Moon Shaman Festival!
Amber has also been very busy in Kathmandu with HED and 3 Jewels Adventures promotions and trip plans! It is a difficult time in Kathmandu because the Gov't has instituted "Load Sharing" which means that the electricity is shut off for 6 hours..twice a day! This makes running businesses, communications etc. very difficult. But as My Brother says "It Is What It Is". Amber recently spearheaded the formation of The Nepal Guides Cooperative, which I detailed in an earlier posting. Then he sent me an attachment detailing The Nepal Guides Cooperative 2011 Everest South Climb! It will be a total Nepali run Expedition! It will be led by KB Tamang(Amber's younger brother), who summitted Everest on May 20th, 2009! We will also be helping to remove trash and garbage from Everest as well! The cost is Half of what one would pay to a Western based expedition! We are looking for a minimum of 4 climbers with a maximum of 7. I am the 1st to sign on....after having to agree to certain "concessions" from Sue! We also have another "possible" client already!
The entire Expedition will be filmed by Kanuri Sherpa and others as part of our ongoing Documentary production.... "The Unseen Himalayas". Amber and I will handle logistics etc. And....if the conditions are right and "The planets line up correctly"....we may make our own summit attempt!

Amber's Dream

This is an "Un-Official", Year End Report" of The Himalayan Education Development Project!
Hello to all Friends and Supporters!

I have traveled to Nepal, Tibet and India many times during the past 20 years. I formed many 'bonds" with guides and porters during that time. However,on a 3 week long trek to Ladakh in the summer of 2008 , my guide was a young man, Amber Tamang. He was young enough to be my oldest son's age!

Amber and I became "best of friends", during this extremely remote and arduous journey to a region of the world rarely encountered by Westerners. We formed a "Spiritual Bond" and a partnership.

In February 2009, we decided to form The Himalayan Education Development Project. Our first project, the Jana Priya Secondary School Community Library was completed 4 months later. We also paid for a young Nepali college student's first year of medical school at one of Kathmandu's top universities. This gesture of "compassion" from The Himalayan Education Development Project caught the attention of Nepal's Prime Minister. He then agreed to pay for the remainder of her college education.

Kanuri Sherpa, a graduate of the Jana Priya Secondary Regional School, dreamed of becoming a videographer with the hope of documenting Nepal's rich and varied culture. Amber and I decided to film a documentary about the Himalayas that is rarely seen by "outsiders". We invited Kanuri to join us as a team member of The Himalayan Education Development Project. We were able to provide him with a professional grade camera.

In a special ceremony,celebrated throughout Nepal in October, Amber(the eldest brother) was honored by Pema, his younger sister, for helping to provide for all family members. Pema then honored me by "including me" as a "much" older brother in providing for The Family. This gesture took me by surprise and I was truly honored!

In this New Year, The Himalayan Education Development Project is committed to continuing to support the educational needs throughout Nepal!

A Continuous Journey!

Hello Everyone!

It has been awhile since the last entry. After my return to the States, I "jumped" right back into training and HED/3 Jewels fundraising and planning.
I am scheduled to present 3 slideshows/lectures in December/January and am involved in Fundraising Projects with Southwestern Central High School....related to HED.
Amber is planning on,hopefully, coming to the States in June/July 2010! We are very excited about this as he will have an opprtunity to visit his 2 brothers who now live and work in NYC and Oregon! Also, He and I will be involved in Fundraising Events for HED. I am thrilled at the prospect of "My Brother" coming here....yet we still have some "hurdles to clear". Since 9/11, all foreigners applying for Visas are carfully "srutinized", and all paperwork,recommendations,etc. must be "spot on"!
I am working with The International Institute of Erie on a joint Fundraising Event! I have committed to carriying "100 Pounds For 100 Miles For 100 Children"!
I hope to walk from Lakewood to Erie(approx. 50 miles) carrying a 100 pound load on my back! We will then host a Concert/Dinner Event. I will then walk from Erie to Lakewood! All donations/pledges/funds raised will be divided equally between HED and The International Institute which helps refugees from Nepal, Bhutaan, Somalia and other countries, find housing, work and "a better life" in The U.S.! We are hoping to get 100 individuals/groups to donate or pledge $ 100 each! If you'd like to be part of this Event please contact me!
I am currently in the training and planning stages of this Event, which will take place sometime after the New Year!
Amber is back in Kathmandu after leading a Buddhist Pilgimage in Nepal and India with The Ven. Robina. We are very pleased with our 3 Jewels Adventures advertisement in the Dec/Jan issue of Shambhala Sun! Some Additional Thoughts

Hello Again!
I just got done posting some pictures from our trek and wanted to clarify a couple of things!
The last picture in the series is of myself, Amber Tamang, Amber's mother, grandmother and cousin when we went on a day trip to visit a very old monastery outside of the Kathmandu Valley.
Also, I hope you will forgive my "lack of tech knowledge" regarding some postings! I am still in the learning phase!
I would also like to answer a couple of questions that I am frequently asked about the "rigors" of trekking/climbing and safety issues when travelling to "politically unstable" parts of the world.
First: Trekking/Climbing is a whole "package" of physical,mental and emotional "tests". This trek was 15 days in length and we averaged about 7 to 10 hrs per day of "strenuous" hiking at altitudes from 10,000 to 18,000 feet in varying weather conditions. The terrain is often "rollercoaster", with straight ups and straight downs!Trails are often narrow with extreme drop offs and require one to always be aware of where your stepping.
I view such undertakings as "marathons". 15 straight days of "extreme" physical output with 40% less Oxygen than here in Lakewood. This often makes it hard to sleep and one's appetite is not 'up to par".
However....The payoff is the incredible vistas, mountain scenes....and the incredible interactions with the people who live and work there....many of whom are now my close friends! I am already back in "training mode' for our Shaman Documentary trip in August and the Langtang/Yala Peak Trek/Climb in October!

Second: Someone pointed out to me the other day that Nepal was on the list of places to "avoid" due to political instability and possible "terrorist" activities. I was aware of this, however, I am in daily contact with Amber Tamang and trust his "take on things". Having been "detained at gunpoint" on a trek in 2001, I am very cautious and aware of the "risks" involved in travelling to "unstable"areas and we carefully research and "scope out" our routes.. I am also aware that France and England as well as Jamaica, Mexico,and many other "popular destinations" also have such "advised warnings" also.
For me, it comes down to "A Leap of Faith" and taking "calculated risks". It is part of the nature of Adventure Travel! And the rewards are Beyond The Scope of Words!

Hello Everyone!

Finally, after recovering from "jet lag", and a "nasty" week long intestinal situation.....I am ready to post some pictures from the Summitting For Schools trek/climb in the Everest Basecamp region of Nepal!

I will give you a brief overview of the pictures now as they are in chronological order during the trip. We landed in Lukla....roughly 10,000 feet and I was happy to see that the runway had been paved. On my last trip here 16 years previous, it was "rough" gravel and quite a hairy landing!

We immediately loaded up and headed for Namche at 12,000 feet. The weather became progressively worse with rain,wind and some snow hampering our progress and views!

As I said in an earlier posting....we made a team decision to not attempt the climb and after heading back down to Tengboche Monastery....the weather broke and you will see Everest and lhotse showing through the clouds bathed in Alpinglow!

One of our goals was to get some documentary footage(for our series The Unseen Himalayas) of porters and the enormous loads they carry for very low pay. We were fortunate enough to be in the middle of a Maoist led rally and subsequent "peaceful"protest regarding forming a "union" for porters and all Nepalis involved in the trekking/tourist industry in the Himalayas!While we do not necessarily "support" and agree with the Maoist agenda....we also are hopeful that by their,so far, peaceful actions....this could be a catalyst for HED to better highlight and help with this very critical movement!

Our videographer, Kanuri Sherpa got some great footage and I was able to interview a number of "western trekkers" to get their take on the need for better pay and working conditions for porters.

And, it appears as though our efforts have "caught the attention" of some L.A. producers who are interested in HED's efforts and Documentary endeavors! So we are very excited about our Documentary being "picked up" by a major adventure based travel show!

I am glad to be back home for awhile AND over the little "bug" I brought home with me! I lost weight on the trek,which is natural.....but the additional weight lost from the "episode"...I would not recommend as a way to get rid of "those unwanted pounds"!

Heading Home

My last day in Nepal until next August. And while I am excited to be going home to my wonderful family....I am also a little sad about leaving! I now have "roots" here....a great friend and a "second family"!
Yesterday was the last day of the Dawali Festival....a 5 day event of celebration and family gatherings! Children going place to place singing traditional songs in exchange fro smanll gifts and candy!
Amber invited me to his house for a ceremony where his sister honors her brothers by preparing a special meal, blessing them by painting a "Tika" on their forehesd and then thanking them for all they do! I was honored to be asked to attend.....Then, to my surprise Pema(Amber's sister) asked if she could also "honor" me! iwas overwhelmed and humbled as she performed this ritual in my honor also! They refer to "older,wiser men" as "Buddha". I agree that i am 'older"....however the "wiser" part is up for debate!haha
So please stay tuned and I will post pictures and videos after my return to the states Oct. 22

Two more Days till I head home!

Hello everyone!

It has been a very busy few days with HED and 3 Jewels business concerns and finalizing our treks and climbs for the 2010 season. We have two trips that will be fundraising in nature for HED. August 2010 is our Documentary trek to the DudhKunda Jatra Shaman Festival. Shamanism is a very ancient cultural heritage and during this time of the full moon, Shamans gather for this unique festival. We are to be some of the first "outsiders" granted permission to film this unique and highly secretive cultural practice!

We also have a Summitting For Schools trek to Langtang with an ascent of 18,000ft Yala Peak. Which makes this trip unique is that we will be helicoptered back to our trek start after the climb!

I had an inquiry about any pictures posted about our HED efforts and I have some right here if you want to scroll to earlier postings.

Also....I will be posting new pictures when i return to the states on Oct. 21st.

I have had a wonderful time with Amber and his family and all our friends here! I am now "part of the family" and it makes me feel very honored!

So once back home.....I have many things to work for HED!

By the way....HED is now officially a "legal" non-profit!

Weather Stymies Climb But A Beautiful Trip Still Happens

Hello Everyone!
I am back in Kathmandu after weather curtailed our summit attempt of Island Peak. We climbed to Chukkung near the base camp (17,000 feet) amidst rain and wind that reduced visibility to near zero at times. We discussed whether to "hunker down " for awhile to see if we could catch a break in the weather but our client had a "tight" return date to the States and so we decided to head down.
We went to TengBoche the next day....again in total rain and socked in cloud cover....BUT later that night the skies began to clear and we were given an "AlpinGlow" spectacular view of Everest peeking through the clouds! It is the way it goes when one is climbing in the Himalayas! The weather determines everything!
However....the next 4 days trekking down to Lukla were simply spectacular with views of Everest, Lhotse, AmaDablam and the entire Everest range!
Perhaps i might have been disappointed had I not already climbed Island Peak 15 years before. And ...How could I be disappointed? I am again in the mountains I love with my close friend and buisness partner Amber Tamang....doing what I love to do!
Our client also enjoyed himself inspite of the weather and we have had a wonderful 3 days in Kathmandu exploring the area and soaking in this "unique" cultural experience!
Our Summiting For Schools fundraising efforts brought in funds to support the full time librarian at the Jana Priya Secondary School and also begin to address the other projects we are currently working on!
I will be here until Oct. 20th helping to put the final touches on our HED website and finalizing our trekking/climbing offerings for 2010.
I will post pictures from this trip when I retuen to the States....as the internet services in Nepal are "very iffy" and downloading can take literally hours!

From D.C. To Nepal

Hello all!
I am in Namche Bazaar, the unofficial Sherpa capital of Nepal. I arrived yesterday afternoon and less than 12 hrs later was on a Twin Otter flying to Lukla one of the highest and most dangerous landing strips in the world! But since my last visit they have actually paved it!
So we landed sorted our gear and headed for Namche Bazaar....a 10 hour trek with more than i vertical mile of elevation gain.
But 7 hours in, near Monju it was obvious that I was at my end for that day! The combination of 18 hrs. of Jet Lag.....less than good food and lack of sleep caught up with me. My wind was good but my legs felt like they were "Gumby's". So we stopped for the night!
After a good meal and a full 10 hours sleep I felt refreshed and we climbed the 3,800 feet to Namche Bazaar in 3 hours! At just under 12,000 feet it is a magnificent place I will send photos soon! We will rest here till tomorrow and then trek to Tengboche Monastery....about 6 hrs and camp there. Then on to DingBoche, Chuukung, Island peak basecamp and a short night at Highg camp...then the summit and back to basecamp!

Namaste and Lasso to all our Friends!

The last few weeks have been a very busy and beneficial time for The Himalayan Education Development Project and 3 Jewels Adventures!
Saturday September 5th ,Evergreen Outfitters held it's Full Moon Paddle event. Mike and Addie offered to donate $5.00 of each rental to The Himalayan Education Development Project!
We were honored and thrilled by their generous offer! As of Friday Sept. 4....only one person had actually "signed up" for the event. But we remained hopeful and my wife Sue and I showed up at the boat landing near the Rod & Gun Club at 6:30pm....expecting maybe a couple of eager paddlers. Soon, it became obvious that this was going to a BIG event!
Almost 20 people showed up! I was thrilled and moved by the response and we paddled up the lake watching the red sky sunset and then headed back down with the full moon guiding our way!
My sincere Thanks to Evergreen Outfitters and all those who turned out to support our Project!

The Himalayan Education Development Project is now an "official" registered Non-Profit organization! Thanks to the efforts of Dale Robbins of Burgett & Robbins....who donated his services in order to help us establish HED's official non-profit status!

Another Thank You goes out to Tom and Lou LaLond of Copy Quik Printing in Lakewood!
They did the setup and printing of HED's Corporate Fundraising Packet and generously gave HED a Great Deal on the cost!

On Wednesday Sept. 6....I gave a slide presentation to The Antique Study Club. It highlighted HED's July trek into the Tapting region of The Himalayas and our completion of The Jana Priya Secondary School Community Library Project! They generously took up a collection for our upcoming and ongoing projects!

AND....on the same day.... Southwestern Central School agreed to "adopt" The Jana Priya Secondary School as their "Sister/Brother" school!
High School Principal Mike Cipolla met with Middle and Grade School Principals, Greg Paterniti and Bill Caldwell and they pledged to raise $1,000 for the Jana Priya School!
This is only the beginning.....as now students and teachers will be able to interact with their peers in this remote regional school! For now....it will be through letters as this region has no electricity! BUT we are hopeful that within a year there will be electricity in this area through HED's efforts with the Nepali government to build a Mini-HydroElectric Station! So...hopefully we will soon be able to bring computer service to the school and SWCS and Jana Priya can exchange greetings and educational ideas via the Internet!
Our sincere appreciation goes out to SWCS and the outstanding Leaders who helped make this happen!

The Island Peak - Summitting For Schools Climb is only a few weeks away! I will be heading to Nepal, September 30th and hitting the trail to Island Peak Base Camp for the 20,305 foot summit attempt! Donations have been steadily coming in and there is still plenty of time to send in your donation....to me, Jim Tillotson/P.O. Box 257/Lakewood NY 14750.
Donors names will be placed on the summit in a canister and all those who donate will receive an autographed Summit Picture!

Island Peak trip prep, HED Events and Buddhist studies

Lasso is a commonly used Tamang greeting and I pass it on to you all!
We have been very busy since the last post with preparing for our upcoming Summitting For Schools - Island Peak trek and climb as well as various fund raising activities!

Training to climb a 20,000 foot Himalayan peak is a prime focus of my daily routine these days!
Even though it is not a "tall" peak by Himalayan standards.... it still requires a fairly regimented schedule to be in shape for the trek in....the time "At Altitude"....and the climb itself!
So I am pushing my 55 yr old body to it's limits and enjoying every minute of it!

The Himalayan Education Development Project has a number of "Events" coming up in September:
Labor Day Full Moon Paddle with Evergreen Outfitters
Evergreen Outfitters in Ashville has offerred to donate $5.00 of all participants fees for this event to HED! We are very grateful to Mike and the staff for their kindness in helping further our efforts! So check out their web site and join this unique event!

Antique Study Club slideshow/lecture - Sept. 9 -1PM
I will be giving a slideshow/lecture at the YWCA Lodge in Lakewood.
There will be photos and video of our recent trek into the Tapting region of Nepal where we helped dedicated the Jana Priya Secondary School Community Library which was built and furnished through funds raised by The HED Project.

Himalayan Journeys Presentation - Sept. 26 - 7 PM.
A slideshow/ lecture will be presented highlighting The HED Project Efforts in the remote areas of the Himalayas. Our recent July 2009 trek to the Tapting region of Nepal will be the focus of this presentation.

I am currently involved in a Buddhist Studies Course through a Buddhist Cultural Center located in British Columbia. Even though I have been a student of Buddhism and a practising Budddhist for 20 plus years....I felt it was time to obtain a degree in Buddhist Studies....which will help me as a trip leader for 3 Jewels Adventures and also with my work in The Himalayan Education Development Project. So....after having just retired from teaching....I am going back to school!

Dear Blog Followers and Friends of Tillie and HED Project,
Greetings From Kathmandu

This is to say hi to all of you and thank my buddy and big brother Jim 'Tillie' who has adopted me as a younger brother and partner to make the dreams of HED Project a reality. I feel blessed to be in touch with all of you through this blog and through presentations by Tillie. I would like to thank you all for supporting us by donation, suggestions and well wishes. HED Project team here in Nepal is so much inspired to bring more meaningful projects in the future.

I had first trekked with an American clients in the Himalayas in 1999 and so far there are more than 40 previous trekking clients now friends in regular contacts by e-mails. And it's so wonderful to keep adding the friends from other side of the world. To whom I have never met, and who have never been to Nepal would like to welcome in the network and would like to wish you all all the best. I am sure some day I will be able to come to the USA and meet all the friends and supporters of HED Project in person.

You all know through the blog and contacting Tillie about our upcoming projects. We are all set to summit 20000ft peak Island Peak in coming october and as soon as we complete this upcoming expedition we will forward the list of our projects in which you can contribute suggestions, donations and be part of them!

Cameras, Itineraries, and Turning Ideas Into Realities!

Namaste Friends!

I never envisioned myself as someone who would be on a computer.....hours on end. In the Public Education World.....people my age are considered "Dinosaurs"! I am "technologically" inept and would rather actually "Talk" with someone, either face to face or over the phone!
However..... to accomplish what Amber and I need to accomplish.... requires me to "catch up with the rest of the world!" So.... I am slowly getting better at communicating over the internet and even engaging in "Instant Messaging".... mostly with Amber....U.S. to Nepal in the push of a button!
So.... here is the latest news from The Himalayan Education Development Project (HED) and 3 Jewels Adventures:
1.) We have purchased a Professional Grade Sony camera! I spent 3 days calling Sony's Headquarters on the East and West coasts. I would explain
what we were doing through HED and how we were looking for a video camera that would meet our needs ( I even had the specific model, after consultation with Amber and Kanuri Sherpa). I was graciously passed along from dept. to dept. and contact person to contact person.
My request was a bit forward.... Can you either donate a camera to our cause or at least give us a "masssive discount"....in exchange for us claiming you as one of our sponsors on our Documentary, websites etc?
I was aware that the "economic meltdown" had to also have affected, even massive companies! But...I can be fairly persuasive!
Finally.... after many "At the tone, please leave a message" and "I'll transfer you to someone who can better expedite your need"....I met Ernest! I explained 3 Jewels/HED mission and our need(for the 80th time)....and Ernest said "let me get your home/cell phone #....and I'll get right back to you). Well....you know what I was thinkin!
But....20 minutes later he called me back with an offer "I couldn't refuse"!
The end result....3 Jewels/HED has the Pro model camera we wanted....At a Great Discount! It is on it's way to my house....in time for Kanuri to film our Island Peak (20,305 ft) Himalayan Summitting For Schools Fundraising Climb!
Our heartfelt thanks goes out to Ernest's efforts and willingness to "Go The Extra Mile"! I promptly emailed Sony Headquarters and told them to either give Ernest a raise, a commendation.... or at least a "Job Well Done" in his personnel file!
2.) Island Peak Itinerary:
We are all set for our trek into the Everest Base Camp area and our Summitting For Schools Fundraising Climb of Island Peak - 20, 305ft.(Oct. 1st to Oct. 16)!
The Jamestown Post Journal has been great in posting articles about our fundraising efforts for HED and we have had a great response, so far!
And Evergreen Outfitters in Ashville has agreed to donate $5.00 per person to HED for people who sign up for their Labor Day Weekend Full Moon Kayak and Canoe Paddle Event. So....please look for the advertisements and Join In....All for a Good Cause!
3.) SWCS and Jana Priya School collaboration:
I am working with SWCS Principal, Mike Cipolla to have SWCS adopt the Jana Priya school ( as I explained in another entry). We are in the process of making this happen!
And....I had the idea of having a group of SWCS students and teachers come to Nepal next summer (arrainged and guided by 3 Jewels Adeventures)....and trek into Tapting and meet the students and teachers they are helping! It would be similar to students going on Language Trips to France, Spain etc. BUT....this would be a FIRST! Besides.... you can go to those other countries anytime!(HAHA).
SO....now that it is "officially out there" It has to Happen! The SWCS students/teachers would fund raise this year for the Jana Priya School and after returning.... the experience could be used as a "Learning Tool" throughout just about all subject areas!
So that's what we have been up to since the last posting!

New Projects and upcoming Climb

Hello once again!

Since my official retirement from SWCS......I am busier than ever! There don't seem to be enough hours in the day to get all the things done! It is inspiring and wonderful!

We just had another "client" sign up for our Summitting For Schools Island Peak climb! He is a soldier stationed, I believe, somewhere in Iraq and he had emailed me awhile ago about an Annapurna Circuit trek. Hadn't heard back.....so I mailed him about our upcoming climb and he enthusiastically responded with a "thumbs Up".

In addition, Our climbing team is now going to have Amber Tamang as the trip leader....his brother(and 2009 Everest summitter) KB Tamang as our climbing guide.....and Kanuri Sherpa as our videographer! Myself, Ted P. and Rick W. round out the team!
I am really excited about trekking, camping and climbing with Amber and KB ....my new younger brothers!

Camera negotiations: Amber and I decided that Kanuri needed his own Pro-model video camera......he has to rent it when he needs to work on his own buisness or film our projects.
They are not cheap.....but with some help from Brother Mark K. and strategic calls to Sony Headquarters explaining our HED upcoming projects and well intentioned "PLEASE HELP US" ......I think we are going to get a great discount OR maybe a donation of a camera.
I am optimistic!
We have a new project in our HED list: The Buddhist Cultural Preservation Project.
Amber emailed me about how a monastery we visited inKanuri's village was being used to store grain....and had no permenant Monks residing there. and was in need of upkeep ....and how central, Buddhism is to the Sherpa and Tamang people....but how younger people are opting for more modern/western things and losing some of their Cultural and Religious Heritage.
So we are putting together a pamphlet to send to our western Buddhist friends and Buddhist centers throughout the U.S. We hope they will generously fund us in thisn newest HED project!

Projects,Preparations and Promotion

Namaste to All,

We have been very busy since returning from our Library Project Trek!

Amber was one of the leaders on a 2 week trek into the Ladakh region of India . He arrived back in Kathmandu yesterday and now has a few weeks to rest, be with his family and get settled in his new home.

I have been busy writing articles for our local, regional paper as well as a larger state wide publication. They featured an account of our trek as well as photos posted here of the finished library and the festivities.

I also contacted USA TODAY to see if they might be interested in publicizing The Himalayan Education Development Project's efforts throughout the Himalayas. The person I spoke to seemed very interested and I sent a writeup for consideration! Hey....ya never know!

We are also happy to report that donations(pledges) have been coming in for our first Summitting for Schools climbing expedition to Island Peak(20,305 feet)! It is a wonderful feeling to know that people are willing to give ongoing support toward our projects!

I am also in "full training mode".... 4-5 miles of power walking a day with weighted pack that also includes 1 mile of jogging....followed later by intervals on the stationary bike. I follow Messner's advice "You can't over train when it comes to the Himalayas!"

So that's a brief update from 3 Jewels Adventures and The HED project for now.

I have already booked my return flight to Kathmandu....ordered some essential climbing gear for our summit attempt in Oct. and been on the phone with a Buffalo News reporter who was gathering information for an article that is scheduled to appear in Monday's edition!
I had to send him pictures from our trip(which i had not had a chance to look at yet and touch-up etc.)
Also....being that i am not the most technologically advanced individual....Sue had to help me with this task! We also encountered some computer gliches...which slowed the process!
In preparation for our October climb of Island Peak (20,305 feet).....it occurred to me that this could also be an opportunity to fund raise for The Himalayan Education Development Project!
So here is what I have come up with:
You may pledge any amount of money for each 1,000 feet climbed.....I have proposed $1.00 per 1,000 feet up to 20,000 feet!Of course if you are inclined to pledge more.....please do not hesitate!
For you generous donation.....your name will be added to a list of donors and placed on the summit, in a canister!
In Addition....you will receive a photograph of our team on the summit....signed by the climbers as our thanks!
I am also pleased to report that our Lead Climbing Guide will be Amber's brother....KB Tamang who successfully summitted Mount Everest on May 20th, 2009! He will...of course sign the photo also!

I had intended to "rest" until August 1st and then resume my training.....however....my body is needing to workout NOW.
I am not used to taking long breaks from my routine and I can tell that it is time to get back at it!

Back Home!

I arrived back in Lakewood last night! It is wonderful to be back in familiar surroundings and sleep in my own bed!
I was able to get a few hours rest and then got up 3 am am began work on the many ongoing things related to setting up the Oct Everst Basecamp/Island Peak climb......The Himalayan Education Development Project(or HED as Amber and i refer to it) ongoing projects and new campaigns and articles that have been requested by the P.J. and The Buffalo News!
I also have to set up my return flight to Kathmandu from Washington D.C. So there are many things going on!
I am...however... going to try and "chill' for a few days to recover(I am no "Spring Chicken" as Sue has reminded me!).
So when I get the pictures downloaded and my thoughts together....Iwill post some more pics and thoughts and also tell you all more about the young woman who's story.... touched our hearts....and who now will be able to head on her way to making a better life for herself and her family.....thanks...not only to 3 Jewels/HED but to others who joined us as well!
We have openings for our Oct 3 thru 15th trek and climb! Remember...a portion of our expedition prices go toward our HED projects! AND we have the BEST prices!

Last 2 days in Kathmandu

I just spent an incredible day! Amberwas moving into his new home today and i helped load and unload furniture....hang curtains...clean a bit and try to just lend a hand. It is a small 2.5 story house....more ranch size units...The first floor is done and the other 1.5 uppers will be done within the year.The entire house including foundation has been done by hand....no electric orair tools...all by hand.
It is a beautiful place outside Kathmandu....away from all the congestion and noise with a beautiful view of the mountains and jungle!
I did not take any pictures because Amber wanted to wait until it is totally finished.
I was honored to be part of the house and family purification and blessing ceremony that was performed by two monks from the local monastery! They chanted scriptures and built a small triangular shaped fire where Amber and his family offered varios plants,grains,milk,rice and spices!
Then we were all asked to kneel in front of the monks whom pured purified,medicinal water into our cupped hands....which we then sipped and spread the rest on our heads,hearts and body!
I was honored that they asked me to take part in such a moving ceremony!
It is something I will always remember!!
I leave for home tomorrow night at 10:00pm and will arrive in Buffalo at around 6;00pm the 15th of July!
In my days in Kathmandu I have met some wonderful people both local and foreign!
We have shared stories over lunches and dinners and developed bonds that i am sure will continue to last.They are all"Seekers' who journey not only throughout the world exploring new places and cultures ....but they are also constantly,passionately working for the good of all!
When i return and have a chance to relax and recharge i will write more about these people...where they come from and how they have helped so many!
I have also grown very familiar with "getting around" in Kathmandu....where to get the cheapest taxi, the best meal ....how to negotiate the maze of narrow twisting streets!
I am looking forward to coming home for awhile! Being with Sue,Ben,Matt and all my loved ones!
And continuing our efforts to help through The Himalayan Education Development Project!
We have many new projects to promote and two ongoing projects which we have completed in less than 6 months!
After a brief rest time I have to get back to my training regiment....because I will be heading back here again to to trek into the Everest Basecamp area and climb Island Peak (20,305 ft) for the second time!
This will be special because I will be with Jamestown feloow adventurer Ted Pasquale who has signed on to tackle this climb! We both bear the physical effects of year of athletics and adventuresome activities.....but as I told him....we will just go at "our pace" and with a good mental attitude and determination...we will give it our best!
Our Guide will,hopefully be Amber's younger brother, KB Tamang -2009 Everest summitter!
So we will be in very good hands!
Next time I write it will be from Lakewood NY....so until then my best to you all and my heartfelt thanks to all who have helped and continue to help make wonderful things possible for so many!

Helping out where we can

hello all!
today we checked out the inner workings of our website thanks tothe yahoo chat back and forth help from Sue! We are going to wait and build it when Amber returns from a trek to Ladakh in late July!
However....we were able to engage in project #2 of The Himalayan education development Project.
Today we posted the tuition for a Tamang girl to continue her education! Her family had fallen on very hard times and did not have enough finances to send her to her first year in post secondary school. Shescored a very high grade on her national exam and qualified for acceptance but was going to have to wait a year or so because she did not want to be a burden to her family.Amber's wife...Sushma brought it to our attention and afterwe talked we have seen to it that her first yaer is taken care of!We were helped by another individual from Nepal as well!
It must be noted that in Nepal ....the price of higher education is nothing compared to the states!
So we felt very honored to be able to help this young lady!
We are also working on obtaining an ongoing funding to provide a librarian to oversee the community library in Tapting
The cost will be around $100.00 per month.....I am going to talk to SWCS's wonderful Media Specialist...Barb Kane about maybe a group of the county school libraries "adopting" the Tapting library and helping to make this possible!
3 more days in Kathmandu until I return home! I am comfortable...having a great time and busy...busy. But the best part is all the wonderful contacts that are being made from various countries all over the world!

On The Job in Kathmandu

Namaste Friends!
Since arriving in Kathmandu we have been busy...busy...and i wouldn't have it any other way!
We right away went to a computer graphic friend of Ambers and designed an appreciation poster which we will be giving as a gift to all our donors of the Jana Priya Community Library Project.
You will have to wait and see what it looks like!
And....thanks to my wife, Sue Ellen, we now have registered domain name for our "official" Himalayan Education Development website. It is www.himalayaneduproject.org. So please look it up when we are finished working on it!
Amber is going to enlist the aid of a friend who designs websites to help us out.....cause there is no way I could negotiate it!....that's for sure!
In addition....we are looking to get a Professional grade film camera for our documentary film maker Karuna.
He did an outstanding job on our Tapting trek but had to rent the camera!
So we decided that we'd work to get him one!
I then contacted fellow teacher....great friend...and spiritual traveller Mark Kirsch to help us make this possible. He teaches Art,photography,Ceramics...you name it, he does it!
But his passion is photography and with his connections we are going to contact Sony and do a little "arm twisting" and --- kissing and se if they will donate a camera in return for sponsorship advertisement with our company.
I have also asked him if he would like to join us next August on a trip to film a Shaman Festival taking place in Dudh Kund. he would be a fellow documentarian. And he could use this trip as a 'teaching' tool.......AND THEN.....write the whole trip off as a deduction......and log in the much required Professional Development Hours! It seems like a win win!
This afternoon I am also meeting with an Indian correspondant and german photojournalist from the AP! I met them last night and they are here for a month doing a piece on the Maoist influence in politics in Nepal. They just returned from Sri Lanka where they were documenting the political upheavels there.
Once they discovered that i had worked with"troubled kids' ....they want to incorporate what 3 jewels is doing regarding Education in the Himalayas and how it relates to the "street children "of Kathmandu.
I eagerly agreed....but only if The Himalayan Education Development Project and 3 jewels would get some International press!
So there has not been much time for relaxing and site seeing.....but I am very excited about all of it!

Janapriya School Community Library-Tapting Solnasa

Hey Again,

Sorry for the confusion! But as many of you know.....when it comes to the "tech stuff'...I am not yet up to speed.

I am going to just put these pictures up here in no particular order...because...it has taken my friend and i quite awhile to get it this far!

so...a brief description....The building you see is the completed library! Last time all that was there was the foundation. We unpacked the books and placed them on the new shelves!

When we got done ...the entire school and many of the local dignitaries from the region held a wonderful ceremony in our honor!

Amber and I were somewhat embarrassed by all the showering of ceremony for us...but it was a very special time for the village and the region!

Amber and i were asked to speak and afterwards we were presented with Khatta scarves and our heads were annointed with "Abir" ....the red powder...which is used to show honor and respect.

It was a very emotional time not only for Amber,myself and our entire crew...but for all present!

I hope you enjoy these pictures......I will post more in the near future....and save some for future slide/lectures to raise funds to help continue our ongoing efforts in this and other areas!

Hello Everyone!
We arrived safe in Kathmandu yesterday after a 12 hour bus ride from Sahvila.
The day before we trekked for almost 11 hours.....6 uphill through rain soaked trails and very steep grades. we then descended for another 4 hours to the village.....arriving around 7 pm.
Our bus was leaving at 5:45 am so after some dinner we all collapsed and tried to get some sleep.
We left for Kathmandu and to say that we were on a road would be pushing it! It was more like a better kept hiking trail! The bus was a Tata which are used all over Nepal and India....but the important element is the driver....and right awawy I could tell that he was good at his job!
And right awawy we hit some obstacles....the first being a downed tree in our path. So a few of us got out and with a Nepalese knife or kurkuri we managed to cut the tree and toss it down the hillside.
So we were on our bumpy way again.....until...the road was blocked by a slide of stone that had also collapsed part of the road.So....a few of us got out and began to heave large stones and boulders out of the path and helped to fill in the missing part of the road. The bus then was able to creep across this hastily constructed area. I want to relate that if the bus was to "go over the edge" it would be a 600 to 800 foot drop!
So...we are on our way again...until...another big rock slide with a landslide about 50 feet long further up the road.
At this point....the driver and the other passengers started debating about what we were going to do? Do we wait for another bus to come from the other direction.....do we walk to the next village? Then Amber and i suggerst that instead of sitting aroung discussing.....WE ACT...and start to clear away the mud, dirt rock and debris.
So we get to it.....mostly our 3 Jewels Team. Seeing us in knee deep mud hand clearing all this mess....some of the others...who up until now had not pitched in....began to go at it!
3 hours later....covered in mud and exhausted....the bus negotiates the path we cleared....with some group pushing!
And we are on our way....shortly leaving the path and getting onto actual pavement!
After almost 12 hours we arrived in Kathmandu and I took a taxi to the Potala Guest House....took a much over due shower...got a quick bite to eat and collapsed into bed!
Amber has often said that Buddha preached that when one does good things...they must be prepared to be critisized....questioned and face obstacles! It is the way it is! And one can face such things with "woe is me"...or "keep on keeping on!"
I will be posting pictures shortly....as soon as I can figure out how to negotiate the "thingy" that lets me do that!
On a personal note......the bus ride took more out of me that the trek itself....today I have what Jim C. would call "Hobbilage"!

This is another 3rd person blog from Sue. Jim has yet connect to the internet since arriving in Tapting which he discovered is more like a county than a village. He says the scenery is stunning and compares it to the Adirondacks with evergreens and rhododendrons everywhere. He was overwhelmed yesterday by the auspicious ceremony given by the community to dedicate the new library. Many of the village dignitaries were present. Plaques designating book sections were hung, prayers were said, there was dancing, and Jim, Amber and the rest of his family were presented with at least 30 khata scarves around their necks. Each scarf represents a blessing. I'm sure Jim will have a more detailed first person account when he connects. I know I am anxiously awaiting pictures. We have found that the satellite phone doesn't maintain connection for more than a few minutes at a time. However, he will be back in Kathmandu in a few days so should be able to update the blog.

Safe Arrival in Kathmandu

Hi, this is Sue, Jim's wife. He has arrived safely in Kathmandu and due to a break in the weather, they got the first flight out to the airstrip where they began the trek to the village of Tapting. He has called twice from the Satellite phone so that is working well. He called this evening at 7:45 which was around 5:30am in Nepal. He was looking down on a beautiful terraced landscape. He is hoping to post pictures when they reach the village and get out of the rain. He is the first westerner to travel to this village in perhaps 10 years, so is causing quite a stir. There are school children who have never seen a westerner....how amazing! He asked me to post this until he can get to the village and begin to be in touch via the computer.

Today was "officially' my last day as a fulltime teacher at SWCS! I don't think it will sink in until after I get back from Nepal later in July!
Not much left to do but throw my personal gear into a duffel and head for the airport tomorrow!
I will post entries while en route....half the fun is being able to be "just another face" in the traveling crowds!
I have some Outstanding news to report! My good friend and fellow International Adventurer.....Dr. Lyndon Gritters..... is back in Lakewood after successfully summitting Denali!
I want him to tell "His Story" after he has a chance to rest and recharge after the 23 day climb! So be checking the paper for what will be an outstanding report!
However.....I would like to let everyone know that Denali is considered a Pinnacle Achievement in the mountaineering world! My hats off to you Lyndon!
One of the many things I respect about Dr. Lyndon Gritters is his philosophical outlook toward Extreme Adventure and Life! He loves the Journey and all it entails.
As Ed Viesters says "Getting to the Top is Optional.....it's the Being There that makes it all worthwhile!"

Final Preparations

Namaste Friends,
A busy busy time these last few weeks! Retirement plans....parties....final trip logistics....packing books...gear...weighing loads....setting up the satellite/solar power/computer portable system...on and on!
From my teaching and counseling lesson plans......There are two kinds of Stress....Eustress(Good, beneficial, gets ya up in the morning stress)... and Distress(you all know what that is)
What I am experiencing is GOOD STRESS! The only way to describe it is.... it is like getting ready for a Big Athletic event....only triple the butterflies!
I get almost as much enjoyment from the logistical preparation, training, setup and flights.... as i get from the actual experience itself!
The weather conditions for our trek to Tapting.....monsoon season, muddy trails, delays and leeches! So the packing will be light...quick dry....same clothes at least for a few days at a time(No different than at home!).
My wife organized a wonderful retirement party! I was humbled by the number of friends and colleagues who turned out!
And....in lieu of some "knick Knack" gift she suggested a donation to our Education Project would be a better idea!
Well....those in attendence...through their generosity.....put my donations goal OVER THE TOP!
I am so grateful and feel so blessed!
All who have contributed to our first 2 projects will have their names displayed on a Plaque which will hang in the the newly completed Library in Tapting!
I leave Friday June 27th....arriving June 28th at 10 pm in Kathmandu.....We head out June 29th at 8 AM.
It is the way of Extreme Adventure Travel......Pedal To The Metal!

It was exciting to see that Nick Dean of The Post journal published the picture and article about Amber's brother Karna and his successful summit of Mt. Everest!
Amber sent me a detailed write up that he compiled from talking to his brother, which made the article even more special.
My date of departure has been changed. I am leaving two days earlier than planned. Amber emailed me and asked if it was possible....given that it monsoon season and flights to Phaplu can be delayed and/or canceled. Also our expedition size has grown! Along with amber and myself as well as our cameraman....we now have Karna and Ambers sister going along also! I am very excited and pleased as many of the family members will be now part of finishing the library project. Plus they will be able to spend time with family living in Tapting!
Amber and I are busy exchanging ideas about the layout for the Documentary. we are detailing scene shots,interviews, narrative script and the many other things that surroung the production of a documentary film.
To aid in all 3 Jewels Adventures&The Himalayan education development Project undertakings...we have purchased a satellite phone kit as well as a solar generator pack. So we will now be able to recharge all our equipment and call anywhere in the world...from anywhere in the world!
Most major adventure travel companioes have such setups.
I must admit that it will be of benefit to me as well. Often, on my extended trips to remote locations....i need to talk to Sue and the boys more than they need to talk to me!
After a few weeks on a remote trek...especially at high altitude...your mind starts "playing tricks' on you!
Laying in the tent...trying to fall asleep...thinking about home....i will get myself "worked up"....wondering if everyone is alright, if the house is still standing etc.etc.
A two minute "check in" can relieve so much of this needless worry....and let them know i am fine. It gives me a big boost!

So....we are extremely busy with all the Projects that 3 Jewels is engaged in....but we wouldn't have it any other way!

On track and more projects

Plans are still rolling along for our journey to Tapting. Our plans call for flying from Kathmandu to Phaplu on July 2 and trekking into Tapting in 2 to 3 days, depending on the weather and trail conditions. We are all set with our videographer, books,funds and supplies!
I am officially retired June 25....and leaving for Nepal June 29!
Given my advanced age (55.5) it is mandatory that i train daily to keep in shape for such trips.
I was hauling 60lbs- 4 miles (1/2 uphill- 1/4 down-1/4 flat) trying to lower my time each session.
Followed 10 miles of speed intervals on my stationary bike....with some Total Gym strength work later in the evening and another easier 10 mile ride.
Now that the time is closer.....I am hauling 35 lbs for 5 miles with four segments of jogging thrown in-3/4 of a mile( longer...lighter...faster)
Thought some of you might like to know the routine. As I have read and experienced....."Ya can't overtrain for the Himalayas!"
I will taper off starting June 20.
Sue and I drove to New Paltz last weekend and met up with Amber's younger brother Dhan....who now lives in NYC. he brought along two Nepalese friends(brothers)....Sulav and Supath They all share an apartment.
We had a great time and I got to know Dhan better and gave him a packet about our Non-profit. He has agreed to be a board member!
I know we will be seeing each other more often. Weplan to have them all to lakewood for a visit!

Some upcoming treks/climbs:
Fall 2009 - Everest basecamp/Island peak climb - 3 weeks
Spring 2010 - Lakpa Ri/Everest North Col climb - 3 to 4 weeks
Fall 2010 - Cho oyu - 45 days ( still in the deciding stage)
We will have Everest climber Karna(KB) Tamang as our guide for all these trips.....along with Amber and myself.

I just discovered from Amber that Karna is going with us on our trip to Tapting. This is a wonderful development because now his story can be part of the documentary film.

Well known Nepalese filmmaker Ravi Sayami will be documenting the journey to Tapting as well as the inspirational story of Amber, Karna, and the 3 Jewels Adventures family.

May 29th is the anniversary of Hillary and Norgay's summit of Everest. It also is a celebration for the sucessful summit of Everest by 3 Jewels Adventures family member Karna Tamang.

Karna Tamang is back safe and sound in Kathmandu after his successful Everest summit for Then Universal Peace Project fund raising expedition.
The funds raised from this climb will go toward promoting peaceful interactions within the Nepalese government, which has seen a decade long political upheaval that has affected all of Nepal.
I will be posting Karna's summit pictures later today!
We are preparing for our trek to Tapting beginning June 30th. We will be bringing supplies, books and funds we have raised which will be used to finish our library project there! I will be heading out to Kathmandu on June 29th.
Just as a quick note- I was emailing with Amber about keeping electronic devices charged etc. on our trek. There is no electricity in Tapting!
On the major trekking routes from Lukla to Everest Base Camp there is electricity, internet, cold drinks....all the comforts. Yet only a short distance away( by Himalayan standards) none of these exist.
We are making plans to help the Tamang peoples who are no living in caves near the Langtang Park area. Amber is waiting to hear from a contact of his, how our funds and support can best be used.

KB Tamang summits Everest and helping school kids

Amber received confirmation that KB summitted Everest on My 20th! This is an incredible achievement and we are all very proud of KB. Amber reports that KB suffered some snow blindness and had some difficulty at Camp 4 but that he has made it safely down to base camp!
I am sure that there will be a big celebration in Kathmandu when KB arrives there!

We have learned of a situation involving some 7 families(58 people) of the Tamang community who are living in caves adjacent to the Langtang National Park. The elder of the group Kami Tamang (75) says that shortage of lands and being separated from any major support groups has contributed to their current living situations.
There are 28 school age children living in these caves and they have been unable to attend school due to their current situation.
Amber sent me this information and we talked about helping these children with some of the funds we have currently raised. He has been in touch with someone from the area who is aware of the situation and we are waiting to find out which is the best way to proceed.
We will keep you all posted.

When Amber sent the information about the members of the tamang community in need of assistance....we both had the same idea(a world apart) to do what we could to help out!

3 Jewels Adventures is committed to" Making a Difference" in the lives of the people who live in the SoluKhumbu Region. Our treks and climbs are more of a cultural experience rather than just a standard "trip"
A portion of fees clients pay for treks and climbs goes toward our Himalyan Education Development Project undertakings!

I would like to welcome you all to this new blog site! This site will serve as a way for you to keep up with my adventures in the Himalayas working together with Amber Tamang and 3 Jewels Adventures as a trip organizer/leader.
It will also serve to update you about our Himalayan Education Development Project....our new non-profit organization.
My first bit of news is that Amber's younger brother, Karna(KB) was scheduled to summit Everest two days ago! We are still anxiously waiting for confirmation that he is alright!
I am a mere 20 some days from retirement as a teacher at SWCS! And....2 days after that....I will be heading to Kathmandu for a 3 week trek to Tapting....Amber's home village. We are bringing in supplies (books, building materials,etc) in order to finish the library building project for the regional school.
It is no easy task! No roads....only trails....so all has to be carried in....4 days from the remote landing strip. This area is off the main "Everest Highway" route....so does not have all the modern trappings....for instance...there is no electricity in the village.
Our trek is to be filmed as part of a documentary!
You will be able to follow along as we do our thing!
And Hey....if you want to donate to our Project....send me an email and I will let you know to go about it!
